Joke

As a child, my father, who commuted on the New Haven RR every day, told me the following joke:

A passenger who commuted every day on the train noticed that toward the end of the trip each day another passenger would go to the end of the train and shred his newspaper. He would then throw the newspaper strips off of the train onto the tracks.

Finally the first passenger asked the other why he shredded his newspaper and threw it on the tracks every day.

"It is to keep the elephants away."

"There aren't any elephants around here."

"See...it is working!"
